How to Perform Umrah: A Step-by-Step Guide

By the Raahi Team8 min readUpdated June 2026

Umrah is one of the most cherished acts of worship a Muslim can perform — and for many pilgrims from Pakistan, it is the journey of a lifetime. This guide walks you through every step in plain language, so you arrive prepared and perform each rite with confidence.

The four steps of Umrah
  • Enter the state of Ihram
  • Perform Tawaf around the Kaaba
  • Perform Sa'i between Safa and Marwah
  • Shave or trim the hair (Halq / Taqsir)

1. Entering the state of Ihram

Before reaching the Miqat (the appointed boundary), perform Ghusl, wear the two white unstitched cloths for men, and make your intention (Niyyah) for Umrah. Women may wear ordinary modest clothing.

Once in Ihram, recite the Talbiyah frequently as you travel toward Makkah:

لَبَّيْكَ اللّٰهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ

"Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am."

Note: While in Ihram, avoid cutting hair or nails, using scented products, and other prohibited acts. Your Raahi guide explains all of these before you travel.

2. Performing Tawaf

On entering Masjid al-Haram, circle the Kaaba seven times anti-clockwise, starting and ending at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Afterwards, pray two Rak’ah behind Maqam Ibrahim if space allows, then drink Zamzam water.

3. Sa'i between Safa and Marwah

Walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times, beginning at Safa. This commemorates Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail (AS). Make du'a freely throughout.

4. Halq or Taqsir

Men shave (Halq) or trim (Taqsir) the hair; women trim a fingertip’s length. With this, Ihram ends and your Umrah is complete. May Allah accept it.
